PRESS RELEASE: ALS in the Heartland's 10th Annual Wine & Beer Event

Join ALS in the Heartland for their Wine and Beer Event on Friday, August 25th from 5:00-8:30 PM. Festivities will take place at The Shops of Legacy in Omaha to raise awareness and funds to assist area people affected by ALS.

ALS in the Heartland is an independent nonprofit that helps individuals with ALS and their loved ones live the highest quality of lives possible. All services are free to patients.

ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a terminal illness wherein people progressively lose control of every muscle until they reach total paralysis. However, their minds and memories stay fully functional, essentially making them prisoners in their own bodies. After the onset of symptoms, people typically have two to five years of life left; there is no cure.

Not affiliated with a national association, ALS in the Heartland uses 100% of the money they raise to immediately and solely help Nebraskans and western Iowans. For this reason, the agency is especially moved when people from other areas around the country and world reach out in support.

Recently, Larry Harms, who lives in Colorado, discovered ALS in the Heartland while looking for ways to help people living in his native state of Nebraska. Larry is a graduate of Fremont High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He served as a United States Air Force pilot for 20 years.

Larry, himself, was diagnosed with ALS in 2014. His experiences raising awareness and funds at both local and national levels connected him with former football player, coach, U.S. Representative, and fellow Nebraska native, Tom Osborne. Reaching beyond his own struggles to help people experiencing journeys similar to his own, Larry generously donated a football signed by Osborne for ALS in the Heartland’s Wine & Beer Event raffle.

Area businesses enjoy supporting the Wine and Beer Event and its deserving cause as well. Southern Roots, in The Shops of Legacy, was a new shop and new participant last year. Owner Sandy Vrana already looks forward to being involved annually:
